I made biscuits and gravy for my training class today, but I had ZERO desire to eat any of it.
Instead, I had a protein shake and a clean muffin my coworker made. (She is also one of the few “health nuts” in the office).

Back to the gym

Today is my first day back to the gym in more than two months. I have been busy at home with Insanity.
I haven’t laid out a plan, but I don’t know what I want to focus on tonight.
I may do a workout from Nike Training Club, but I’m not sure.
Ideas? Any good plans I should follow to keep building strength and speed?

I played in my garden today! I planted a few bulbs (hopefully it’s not too late for them) and moved my compost bin. It was in the middle of the yard and looked like an eyesore to me. I moved it under my kitchen window, which makes it super easy to dispose of the kitchen waste!
The soil under the compost bin was rich and full of earthworms, so I bought planted two rose bushes!
Then…it started raining and I ended up like a muddy mess.

This run was sucktastic.
I went to a group run at a local beer market for a run to benefit Boston. I get there to find out that they delayed it until next Monday due to the weather. (It rained all weekend, but at 6 p.m. tonight it was flipping beautiful). I can’t run next week due to prior commitments. :(
Anywho, I started with the group and almost immediately was ready to double over in pain. I felt like I had a major stitch in my side. I was not winded and I had stretched before starting. I made it a little more  than half a mile before stopping to walk and try to work out the stomach issue. I made it about another quarter of a mile and had to stop again. After about 1.5 miles the pain finally went away. I just ended up running through it and it eventually went away. But holy moly, it hurt like crap.
I realized the culprit was a Lara Bar that was in my car. I are half of it about 45 minutes before the run. I had not eaten much all day. I should have just waited until afterwards to eat.

Cancelled!

The half marathon I was going to run on Sunday has been cancelled.
Does anyone know of any 1/2s near East Tn in the next few weeks? I really want a long run and a medal.

WTH Tuesday? I thought we were friends.

Can I just start Tuesday over? This morning started off wonderfully until I walked out the door from home.
1. I sat down in my car and spilled my drink all over my outfit. I had to go back inside and change.
2. I had to take my niece to school for my sister. She was a whiny brat and I had to carry her to the car. She is six. She tried to open the door twice and go back to her mom while the car was in motion.
3. Employees are grumpy today too.

Learning about food - GMOs

I have had several eye-opening experiences during the last few weeks. I have never been one to staunchly advocate for something like food before, but I believe now is time.

Last week, I started reading a book called The Unhealthy Truth. It’s about the hidden dangers lurking in our food supply. I am amazed at the volume of our food supply that contains GMOs. I love corn, but it is apparently one of the foods MOST likely to be modified. Yikes. 

One of my biggest concerns with my hypothyroidism is that my body is unable to quickly metabolize and digest foods as “energy” properly.  This causes lower digestive issues that are exacerbated by my food choices. I have a variety of issues caused by my lack of thyroid (due to  thyroid cancer) that I have long blamed on hypothyroidism. After learning about GMO foods, I believe some of my issues can be improved, if not totally corrected, by clearing the junk out of my diet. My weight is one of the big things that seem to be stuck no matter how hard I workout. I have been doing Insanity for the past 7 weeks and the scale has hardly budged. (I know you should not judge solely on the scale, but it still gets under my skin). 

 I have become hyper-aware of the foods I choose to eat. It has only been a few days, but I am working to clear my diet of foods that could be GMO. I joined a CSA for some of my spring/summer fruits and vegetables. (I am attempting to grow the rest in my own garden). Also, I think I have successfully convinced my husband to join a meat CSA as well. The meat CSA is only a few miles from our house and we can drive over and pick up the fresh meat each week. I will be able to pick up the fruit/veggie CSA at the local farmer’s market each week as well.

During the coming weeks, I hope to share more with you about GMO foods so you can educate yourselves as well. I am going to be reviewing web sites, blogs and other sources to learn as much as I can about the food I am putting into my body. I only have one body and I need to do what I can to protect and care for it. Exercise can only do so much good. Eating right and eating consciously will play a significant part in my health.
